The Utility Forum visit Drax Power Station

On Wednesday 3rd August 2016 our team were invited tour to Drax Power Station courtesy of Haven Power.

Generating 4,000 megawatts between six boilers, Drax Power Station is the largest coal-fired power plant in the UK and generates 7% of the UK’s electricity; more than any other power plant in the UK.

Three of Drax’s six boilers have been converted from coal-fired to biomass with the conversion of the other three likely in the following years due to the UK’s commitment to phasing out coal-fired power generation by 2025.

Sarah Walton, TUF Principal Analyst shared:

“While I have worked in the industry for a number of years, I had not until now truly appreciated the scale of work involved in maintaining the UK’s energy supply.  We were impressed by not only the sheer magnitude of the operation but of their commitment to meeting the UK’s energy requirements while also reducing their carbon emissions”
